Read MoreTop 5 Games to Look Forward To In 2012
As 2012 approaches it’s time for us to loosen the purse strings once more as developers work tirelessly to bring us yet another year of fantastic games. 2011 is going to be a hard year to beat since it’s seen the release of some of the greatest games to date. Elder Scrolls V, Batman: Arkham City, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, need I say more? Join me as I count down 5 of the most promising looking games set to be released next year:
#5 Prototype 2
Alex Mercer returns, but this time he’s the enemy! Taking control of a grief stricken Sergeant James Heller, you’ll have a whole set of new abilities at your disposal as you track down Alex Mercer and exact your revenge on him. If you thought Mercer’s abilities were awesome, you haven’t seen anything yet! Heller can effectively turn a guard into a walking viral time bomb or track a target down simply by emitting a pulse of energy out into the world which then radiates back off the individual you were tracking down. If that doesn’t sound cool to you, how about the fact that he’ll be able to literally rip off a tanks cannon and then blow it to smithereens using its own weapon! Radical Entertainment appear to be going all out to vastly improve the repetitive gameplay the first Prototype was renowned for.
#4 Tomb Raider
I never really thought I’d ever be excited to see yet another Tomb Raider release. The franchise has been done to death more than we’d all like and frankly staring at a pixilated woman just won’t ever arouse me in the way developers intend. Thankfully, Crystal Dynamics seem to have got their game together as they intend to present us with a Tomb Raider unlike no other. The game will still incorporate puzzle elements, but instead of it feeling stiff and repetitive, you’ll be immersed in the adventure through open world exploration, a deeper combat system and lots of interactive cutscenes. The visuals are looking absolutely stunning and the fact that you’re controlling a young, inexperienced and scared Lara Croft as opposed to an indestructible Hollywood heroine will make for a much better atmosphere.
#3 Metal Gear Solid: Rising
With an unconfirmed release date of sometime in 2012 and a track record of pushing it back time and time again, one can only hope this game makes it into next year. You will of course take control of Raiden once again and thankfully it’s set before any of the events that took place in Metal Gear Solid 4 – so you’re safe if you don’t own a PS3 and haven’t played it yet. Forget your typical sneaking around, cover to cover gameplay, this game is set to be mainly sword based. You’ll hack and slash at enemies and you’ll have the ability to cut down the environment around you and use it to your adavantage. As you can imagine, there isn’t that much information out there on Metal Gear Solid: Rising, but judging from E3 demonstrations, the katana element looks absolutely awesome!
#2 Hitman: Absolution
Combining elements from Assassin’s Creed and Batman: Arkham City, one can only expect this game to be out of this world! You’ll go from using the environment to perfom improvised kills, to stealthily hiding from realistic AI using Instinct Mode. Similar to Ezio’s Eagle Vision and Batman’s Detective Mode, using Instinct Mode will highlight enemies and allow you to strategize your kills. The game even nods its head to Red Dead Redemption with a mechanism known as Tag and Kill – similar to Dead Eye. Whether you happened to enjoy the old Hitman games or not, Absolution is looking to be one of the best stealth games to date.

The graphics in Mass Effect 3 are looking awesome.
#1 Mass Effect 3
There was no way I was going to disappoint you guys by putting anything other than Mass Effect 3 at number one. BioWare have been making us wait for this game since we finished Mass Effect 2 all the way back in January 2010 – so I think I’ll literally cry if it’s moved back to 2013. Boasting a new co-op mode that sees you take on hordes of enemies with a customized character, Mass Effect 3 has certainly had a lot of work put into it. Of course the most impressive feature is going to the fact that it’ll fully utilize the Kinect’s abilities. Put down that copy of Kinectimals and get ready to trade in Michael Jackson: The Experience as there will finally be a Kinect playable game worth your money! You’ll use voice recognition to issue commands to your team mates and step in Shepard’s boots as you use the motion sensor to take down enemies. Those of you who don’t own a Kinect will still be immersed in the Mass Effect universe and conclude one of the greatest video game franchises of all time!
Read MoreDark Souls – Review
Reviewing Dark Souls is a risqué matter since you’ll either love it, or absolutely hate it to the point where you’d rather endure the painful experience of Sonic Free Riders all over again. Unfortunately, I am part of the latter and as much as I’ll try and give an unbiased review towards Dark Souls, beware that my experiences of the clunky control system, unnatural animations and lack of story may hinder the overall outcome.
The game initially draws you in with its promising box art resembling Sauron, its medieval essence and dark introduction. Unfortunately, the introduction is about as far as the story seems to stem and upon escaping the Undead Asylum you’ll learn that you were chosen to obtain four lord souls and put an end to darkness. Whilst this all sounds awesome, you’ll rarely delve into the story as it’s tailored to be more of an open world game, allowing you to create your own twists and plots. Despite the freedom the game wants to give you, it still feels a little restrictive and linear in comparison to other open world RPG’s of today.
The Small Details:
Just like the box art suggests, you should “prepare to die” as it’s something that happens more than enough times. Of course, we can’t sit here and discredit the game based on its challenging nature, since no one really goes out to play such a reputable tough nut expecting it to hold your hand like Fable III, but it’s the way it goes about it. Instead of resetting a scene after your death, you’re made to restart all the way back at a camp fire, only to die again and have to put up with the same mind numbingly boring fights over and over again! As if that wasn’t bad enough, the awkward and sluggish controls add to the difficulty and more often than not you end up accidentally restoring your health rather than using a well executed attack.
Unfortunately the gameplay is almost a rehash of Demon Souls (which by the way, was one hundred times better) and the only real difference is that you’ll be punished for not exploiting AI weaknesses and you won’t be able to learn from your mistakes.
The texture of the moss covered walls and the dark and gloomy dungeons you find yourself fighting through really adds to the game’s atmosphere and there is no denying that the environments aren’t pleasing to the eye. As gruesome and well crafted the creatures are, you can’t help but notice the repeated animations that plague this game. From the giant raven that constantly looks down, up and right, to the robotic animations that pretty much every skeleton has, the games built in AI is weak and painful to watch.
Dark Souls definitely nailed it with the gothic/medieval soundtrack that brought out the games devilish atmosphere. Whilst the gameplay and lack of story hindered the experience, exploration was made less of chore by the brilliant sounds that the game was able to produce. Take the Lord of the Rings soundtrack and infuse it with evil and you basically have Dark Souls!
Once and For All:
As I said earlier, Dark Souls is a game that you’ll either love or hate so it’s definitely worth trying out for yourself. If you can see past the poorly constructed gameplay and you’re up for the challenge of a lifetime then Dark Souls is just for you, if on the other hand you play games because they’re fun and not mind numbing then go and spend that hard earned cash on something more rewarding – like Skyrim!
Read MoreThe Ever So Popular Xbox 360 Blu-Ray Argument
Ever find yourself battling to defend the Xbox 360’s honor against a PlayStation 3 owner, only to have that all-famous question thrown at you – “yeah, but does the Xbox 360 have a built-in Blu-Ray player?”
Of course, the answer is no, but does it really need one? With technology advancing to a whole new level and the new age of digital media being ushered swiftly in, the need for any type of disc seems almost pointless. So, why would it be that our beloved Microsoft console would need a Blu-Ray player? It simply doesn’t.

...Just imagine this was reality
The mere fact that Xbox Live exists means that you can not only rent or buy full HD 1080p movies, but if you happen to buy or download movies from iTunes or other marketplaces, then you can simply stream them from your PC to your Xbox 360! Sure, it is always impressive to have a nice collection of Blu-Ray movies to show off in your bedroom when your friends or family come around to visit, but won’t they ultimately end up in the attic next to your old video tapes and VCR player? A decade from now, streaming movies or downloading them to then store them to some sort of Cloud based media storage will become preferable anyway. If the future has anything in store for us, then it’s to cut out the middleman in its entirety. Discs will be used for nothing other than storage backup and all of the awesome gadgetry will be made wireless.
Of course, the other argument that most devout Playstation 3 owners have is that their beloved Blu-Ray player allows them to play games on a single disc, as opposed to storing games on 2-3 discs at a time as we’ve seen more recently in some Xbox 360 games. But who cares about that when you know how to flash xbox 360 units and play any media you desire? Sure, that may be so, but is it really that much of an inconvenience to have to switch discs when a prompt appears on the screen? Will we really break out in a feverish sweat from reaching all the way off the couch to grab that second disc? The truth is that it isn’t really a big deal and won’t prove to be until they start creating insanely large games that require 8 or more discs at a time – even though it doesn’t seem likely that such a huge number would be required!
Currently, the Xbox 360 is by far one of the most popular gaming consoles of today and will more than likely continue to be as such for as long as it is around. The use of Cloud gaming is growing day by day and you will be hard pressed to find an Xbox 360 gamer that really cares about the console being equipped with a fancy blu-ray player – especially since it’s leading the way with motion sensor technology. If you wanted to play blu-rays it’s easy enough to simply buy a player made purely for that purpose. A blu-ray player is nothing more than a gimmick that Microsoft doesn’t really need since they have got an army of loyal fans behind them anyway.
Read MoreLoving The New Xbox 360 Dashboard
With the Kinect making its way into console gaming, it was only right that Microsoft banished the outdated dashboard and delivered us with a brand spanking new Kinect-friendly interface. After a slow start with connection issues, is the new dashboard really as good as they said it would be?
The Dashboard’s New Look
At first glance it’s easy to see the influence of the slick and new Metro interface Windows 8 is soon to boast. Doing away with the God-awful lists we painfully learned to love and presenting us with fresh side-to-side scrolling that allow us to navigate through

Aesthetically Pleasing: The new Twist Control dashboard
pleasing blocks, the dashboards new look is more than awesome – it’s simple and functional too!
Kinect-friendly
Coming equipped with Bing is possibly the most impressive feature to be added to the new dashboard. Instead of searching Xbox Live’s inter-webs for a specific game, movie or song, you can now simply use the Kinect’s voice recognition to quickly seek out what you’re looking for. Of course the fun doesn’t stop there! Step into the age of Minority Report by sending out voice commands to your Xbox through the Kinect. A simple “Xbox, fast-forward” will of course move forward your video, whilst the command “Xbox, play disc” will start up the game or movie you’ve left in the console. There are so many different commands to choose from that you’ll rarely be picking up your control pad.
Quickplay
Whilst it’s not the most impressive new perk to the dashboard update, it’s certainly nice to have. The quickplay menu is of course self-explanatory as it allows you to quickly play recently used games. Found on the home blade, the Quickplay menu is just another way Microsoft have been able to add a little more convenience to your life.
Social
The Xbox 360 has always integrated social pipelines into its dashboard, but what’s new with the 2011 update isn’t just the fact they’re all housed under one roof, they have also been vastly improved. Gone are the days of posting a Facebook status update asking if anyone would be up for a game of Battlefield 3 – now you’re able to send what are known as ‘beacons’ to your friends. These beacons alert specific buddies of yours with a subtle message telling them you’d like to play a certain game at a specified time. This is more than useful as it stops the awkward moment when you join a friend’s game uninvited. It’s also much better than begging through Facebook!
But wait, the Facebook fun continues! By allowing you to share everything you do on Xbox Live with your Facebook friends, you’ll no longer have to post statuses telling everyone what game you’re currently playing or what totally awesome movie you’re watching. Instead, this information is automatically shared on your Facebook wall through Xbox Live updates.
Youtube
One thing I found to be a fantastic new addition to the 2011 Xbox dashboard is the ability to access your Youtube account from the Video section. This really is brilliant since you’ll be able to watch any videos you have saved to your playlists, right on that big screen TV of yours! Nice!
Cloud
If you haven’t heard of ‘Cloud’ or ‘Cloud Gaming’, then you either haven’t had the pleasure of sitting through one of those mind numbing Youtube ads, or you’re a caveman. Cloud storage is of course much like Cloud gaming and will pretty much act as an extra hard drive for your console – granted you have a Gold subscription. Using cloud storage will give you peace of mind for the worst case scenarios, but it’ll also allow you to access your saved games from any Xbox 360 in the world. Cloud storage is the way forward! Memory card? What’s a memory card when your hard drive data is backed up on Cloud storage!
Overall
It takes a completely mad, die-hard PlayStation fanboy to not think that the new Xbox 360 dashboard is fantastic! With a complete re-invention of the dashboard that not only puts Kinect users in the driving seat but grants you so many new ways to mix up your social life with gaming, the 2011 dashboard marks the beginning of something grand. Sure, a Gold subscription is needed for near enough all of the new features, but it’s a small price to pay for superior console power!
